Upskilling long-term unemployed people in the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit for occupations in the hotel sector (MIS 5032859)
MEK S.A. Lifelong Learning Centre, as a member of the consortium of lifelong learning centres 'M.E.K.–K.P.P.', is jointly delivering the operation "Upskilling long-term unemployed people in the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit for occupations in the hotel sector", under the Operational Programme of the Region of Central Macedonia, with the Hellenic Hoteliers Federation (POX) as contracting authority.
Its purpose is to deliver programmes that upgrade the qualifications and strengthen the professional experience of long-term unemployed people in tourism occupations, through counselling, training and certification. Its objectives are:
- To upgrade the employment profile of unemployed people and strengthen their position in the labour market, so that they move into work;
- To strengthen the adaptability of local human resources to the new trends and prospects emerging for the further development of tourism in the Thessaloniki area.
Area of intervention
The area of intervention is the area of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy of Thessaloniki (as approved by Decision no. 3386/26-6-2018 of the Regional Governor of Central Macedonia), which comprises:
- the whole territory of the municipalities of Ampelokipoi–Menemeni, Thessaloniki, Kalamaria, Kordelio–Evosmos, Neapoli–Sykies and Pavlos Melas
- the Municipal Unit of Pylaia, Municipality of Pylaia–Chortiatis
- the Municipal Community of Kalochori, Municipality of Delta.
Who it is for
360 long-term unemployed people aged under 25 or over 50 who live in the SUD area of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit.
What it includes
The operation comprises the following set of interventions:
- Counselling support (three individual and eight group sessions per beneficiary)
- Training programmes strengthening knowledge in two subject areas:
- Room attendant
- Food-service assistant in hotel businesses
- Certification of qualifications
The training programmes run for a total of 370 hours, of which 120 hours are theoretical training and 250 hours are a work placement in roles related to the subject.
Subject area: "Room attendant"
The "Room attendant" training programme aims to provide all the KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS a professional in this field needs, applying the core principles of housekeeping. The programme is organised into the following modules:

Subject area: "Food-service assistant in hotel businesses"
The "Food-service assistant in hotel businesses" programme helps trainees understand what a food-service business is and become familiar with the different types of food-service outlets operating within hotel units. The programme is organised into the following modules:
